Blog 5: Reflection
a) What have you learned about the processes of conducting a sound research study in class?
I learned that the process of designing research is not all too difficult, but it is definitely time-consuming. This process has given me an appreciation for what goes into good research: Much of what you do not see happens behind the scenes, and if I'm allowed to stretch the metaphor, the final performance requires many rehearsals and script revisions. Not to be corny, but like any creative endeavor, the beauty of research often results from how flawed it is. A skilled researcher knows when to step away, although the work will always feels incomplete.
b) What have these processes taught you about your future roles as a technical and professional communicator?
Designing research has helped me become a more critical consumer of research. Good research becomes more apparent when you know what to expect, such as clear questions, sound methods, and honest limitations. Being able to select a topic, review the literature, find a gap, design a method, and propose the research has helped me understand what is expected of my own work. I also feel more confident in meeting those expectations as a researcher and contributing to my discipline as a technical writer, both in the workplace and academia.
Hi, Ashton. I totally agree that the actual process is pretty straightforward but eats a lot of time. I really like the metaphors you used; so much of what makes research engaging is working with the limitations and adapting as you go. Learning about the methods behind crafting studies and knowing what methods are the most effective for a given proposal is extremely useful, and I also feel more confident in those things after taking this course.
